Cody Pierce will wrestle one final high school match.

Representing Kearney one last time, Pierce will be in action at tonight's 18th annual Metro Classic Senior All-Star Dual. The event starts 6:30 p.m. at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Pierce collected a 44-13 record on the way to a fourth-place state finish this year. The Kearney senior will take on Piper's Derrick Weller (37-5) in the 135-pound bout of the all-star event.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek has named Kearney as the “Best Affordable Suburb” in Missouri for 2010. The magazine named just one suburb from each state.

According to the magazine’s Web site, “…the focus is not luxury, but rather communities where families can live well for less and enjoy good schools, low crime, and reasonable commutes.”

The first item on the agenda for the Kearney R-1 school board workshop at 6:30 p.m. March 4 is to hear comments from the public.

Ultimately, the board will discuss district patron survey results along with programs and services. This discussion will all lead to where to cut the budget.

Boys basketball moves on

It's back to the playoffs.

The Kearney boys basketball team claimed a fourth consecutive district championship, defeating Staley 56-32 in the Class 4 District 15 title game Friday, Feb. 26, at Staley.

The Bulldogs will meet District 16 champion Platte County in the first round of the state playoffs. That sectional game is set for a 7:45 p.m. tipoff Wednesday, March 3, at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph.

Kearney hoops play for district titles

Both Kearney basketball teams - the boys and girls - will play for district championships tonight, Friday, Feb. 26, at Staley.

The girls will play at 5:30 p.m., and the boys will follow at 7 p.m. Kearney will face host Staley in both Class 4 District 15 title games. The winners advance to the state playoffs.

Jim Baldwin, a democrat from Holt, and T.J. Berry, a republican from Kearney, are on the “unofficial” list of candidates for Rep. Doug Ervin’s seat.

Ervin, R-Kearney, is term limited for Missouri House of Representatives District 35 in northern Clay County including Kearney, Smithville and part of Holt.

The primary election is Aug. 3. The last day to file is March 30. Both candidates listed on the Missouri Secretary of State’s Web site filed the first day – Feb. 23.

Despite not much to vote for on the ballot April 6, The Kearney Courier is having a candidate meet and greet event 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at The Courier office, 105 S. Jefferson St.

Ward 2 of the Kearney Board of Aldermen race is contested. Both candidates, incumbent Dan Holt and challenger Tom Patterson, are expected to be there.

Also, Fire Chief Larry Pratt will be there to talk about the Kearney Fire & Rescue Protection District's $3.5 million bond issue.

After just a couple hours of flakes falling, there have already been numerous calls for accidents around Kearney and Holt on the police and fire scanner.

The calls have ranged from non-injury, vehicles off the road to rollover accidents.

The Kearney School Board is expected to learn the results of an online survey at its meeting Thursday, Feb. 18, at Kearney High School.

The district made the survey available online for about a week to gauge the community’s priorities. Superintendent Dr. Bill Nicely said this would be important as the board will inevitably have to make some budget cuts.

One game for all the marbles.

A battle of the Bulldogs will determine the Suburban Small Six Conference championship in boys basketball Friday, Feb. 20, in Kearney. That's when Grandview comes to town to take on Kearney in a game of defending state runner-ups.

The death of a designer

Famed fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead today. The tragic news has struck the fashion community hard. Many style blogs, Web sites and Twitter feeds reflect the industry's feelings on the designer's death.

According to Women's Wear Daily the 40-year-old British designer committed suicide in his home.

How close is this year's senior class?

The Bulldogs answered that question with their actions, not words. Six of the seven seniors on the Kearney boys basketball team started at least one home game this season.

That was until the Bulldogs' game Saturday, Feb. 6, in Kearney against Pleasant Hill. Grant Cozad approached the coaching staff about allowing Taylor Cook, the seventh senior, to start in his place.

Here is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. I'm always searching for new blogs and Web sites for inspiration. This one has inspired me to want go to home and make a necklace out of things lying around my garage. I probably won't, but it is fun to think that way.

More than 20 people were in line at the library at 8:50 a.m. – 10 minutes before the doors opened. Others waited in their cars.

They were senior citizens waiting for AARP assistance with taxes.

Dodged a major liquidation

The Movie Gallery in Kearney should stay open.

Movie Gallery plans to close about 760 stores – including Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video and Game Crazy stores – and the Smithville location is on that list.

“We are closing these because they are not profitable and because funds from liquidating them can help us moving forward,” a press release states.

Who better to outfit the U.S. Olympians for the upcoming 2010 winter games than classic American designer Ralph Lauren?

The athletes will march into the games during the opening ceremony wearing classic Ralph Lauren-styled outfits. They'll wear navy and red puffer jackets and slim white pants. Forecasters have very differing opinions.

In Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow thus predicting six more weeks of winter. But groundhogs elsewhere (New York, Georgia and Ohio) did not see their shadow, signifying an early spring.

Personally, I’m ready for spring.

I apologize readers, it's been a while, but I'm back.

I just came across this interesting little piece about Tod's, an Italian design company that produces fine leather shoes and other goods.
