Jaestar BBQ was named the reserve grand champion and Sweet Beaver BBQ the grand champion at the 26th annual Jesse James Barbeque Cookout — which was also the 24th annual Show-Me State Championship. Fifty-three barbeque teams participated in the contest during the 43rd annual Jesse James Festival.

Ribbons were awarded to the first 10 places in each of five categories, with $200 going to first place, $175 to second, $150 to third, $135 to fourth and $125 to fifth. The overall reserve grand champion received $500 and a trophy, and the grand champion received $600 and a trophy. A plaque was also awarded by the Kearney Chamber of Commerce for the Showmanship Award, won by Walking Eagle BBQ.

Contest sponsors included St. Michael’s Knights of Columbus Council 8915, North Kansas City Beverage and the Jesse James Festival Committee. Marimack Golf Course provided golf carts. Jim Pratt of Hamilton also provided a golf cart and the use of a trailer for the contest headquarters.

Assistance also came from Kansas City Barbecue Society representatives Reps Phil and Rosemary Morrow. Valerie Fort coordinated lining up the required number of judges, and Emmalyn Pratt made the awards presentations.

Organizers praised the city of Kearney for its preparation of the grounds at Jesse James Park for the contest.

The cook-off will return Sept. 19 and 20, 2014, during the 44th annual Jesse James Festival.
